Sofia is the biggest city and the capital of Bulgaria. Sofia stands in the plain
"Sofia" and is surrounded by the Vitosha Mountain and by the Lyulin Mountain. The location of Sofia makes the climate soft and pleasant. The population of Sofia is about 1 400 000 people.
In the past Sofia was settled by the Thracians 18 century BC because of its thermal springs.
The Romans made Sofia an important centre, turned it into a town and gave it the name of Serdika. In 809 AC, under Khan Krum, Sofia was renamed - Sredets.
The modern city of Sofia was named in the end of 14th century, after the Goddess of wisdom. After the Turkish yoke (1878) Sofia was declared a capital of Bulgaria.
There are planty of mineral water wells out of springs in Sofia downtown and other areas around Sofia like Knyajevo, Gorna Banya, Ovcha Kupel and the town of Bankia (Bankya).
